Keeping Your Job

Once you land a job, rather it be the right job, or the “right now” job, you’re next goal is to keep it. Regardless of what you may be thinking, keeping a job is often more difficult than it may appear. In today’s cutthroat job market, correctly performing ones job is not always enough to secure the position until retirement.

Employers are on the lookout for more than just a warm body to occupy a cubicle. Long gone are the days when a person could settle comfortably into a position, work twenty or thirty years, then retire.

In today’s era, with so much technology, the demand for well-trained workers is ever expanding. Unlike our predecessors, it is impossible to continue in a field without supplementary education or training.

In addition to education, the ideal job candidate will possess drive and determination. Employers look for a spark that says that this person will be a company man. Businesses seek workers whom which they can take pride in. Part of representing any establishment is having a polished, professional appearance. Be forewarned, nonconformists will have a harder road to walk.

Actions also speak greatly in regards to how long you will be hanging on to your job. Employers abhor loud, boisterous employees. Being curt with customers or clients is a quick ticket to “Unemployedsville”. Having down-home manners with big-city professionalism is a wonderful combination that is sure to impress.

Ethical employees are also in demand. Seeing that a company’s future lies in its employees hands, it is critical to make sure that the hands are not ones with sticky fingers. Although this is an obvious point, it is still a big problem in today’s job market. Moral integrity goes hand-in-hand with reliability and punctuality, as ideal employees are those who work diligently and do not waste time with idle activities.

Most employees know the difference between right and wrong. The lady that makes all the personal calls, or the man who plays the perpetual solitaire game, or the one that goes over for lunch--by an half hour--every day, they all know better. It is important to be tuned into to our ‘corporate conscious’, and not to become hardened. It is easy to be come jaded with ones job and eventually to shirk duties. Try not to bring your social life to work as it is usually accompanied by a plethora of problems, ready to prevail over your productivity.

Keeping on track takes a great deal self-discipline but after a routine is established, you soon will become an exemplary employee. By maintaining an outstanding work record, you are giving yourself job security, not to mention a much better shot at a promotion!
